In 2025, we work with community-based organizations to use theatre, film, and music to broaden the discourse on decriminalizing same-sex relationships in Sri Lanka, and to support the Trans Equality Bill.

Political promises aside, even if the current government follows through with their pledge to decriminalize same sex relationships by amending Section 365 of the penal code, a scientific, evidence- based approach is required to help us reflect on what we now know about different sexual orientations, gender identities and expressions that appear to violate norms and mores.

Grassrooted will use theatre, film and music, working together with queer artists to inspire engagement,conversations and discovery.

We will use both the historical lens, and scientific lens to show, for example, that homosexuality is neither deviant of our natural state, nor a “Western Concept.” We will also show that beginning in the early 70s, the scientific community, led by psychiatrists, has pushed back on the notion that  homosexuality and/or bisexuality and non-heteronormative gender identities are mental illnesses. This includes statements from the Sri Lanka College of Psychiatrists who called for decriminalization in 2021.
