Whilst Canada votes to legalise recreational cannabis use, SL sends women’s equal rights in the fight against alcohol to pot!!

Gazettes were published and withdrawn in haste; Supreme Court action was filed in equal haste; yet leave to proceed keeps getting postponed and we all wait in anticipation and trepidation!

How deeply etched in our little minds is this so called ‘culture’ and ‘tradition’, and how entwined is the ‘woman’s role’ within it, that whether or not “women’s fundamental rights have been violated, merely by them not being permitted to drink or be associated with alcohol”, is THE moral question of the day, that clearly merits months of debate and deliberation!

Chauvanism seems to be the order of the day here. One case in point is an article written to the Daily Mirror titled: “SC Defers Delivery of Order on July 9” by S S Selvanayagam. Whilst it serves its purpose of providing information to the reader and overtly appears to be siding and ‘lamenting’ with the women’s right movements, the language of the writer is questionable at best. Apparently the Petitioners ‘nitpick’ and ‘nag’ and ‘indict’ against the ‘purported restriction’. Whilst one cannot be sure if this language is a reflection of the writer himself or whether it was some editor’s idea of a crude joke, one cannot ignore the insidious reinforcement of stereotypes and gender markers made in such a public medium, in relation to this deep seated issue, which has since been sensationalized and belittled by patriarchs such as this.

Although I am well aware that ‘extremism’ in any form tends to defeat the pure and honest purpose of the original intention, one cannot ignore public commentary of this nature, which would no doubt conveniently serve as the topic of hilarious banter at the next misogynistic ‘tavern session’!

How much more amusing it would be to see this current situation in reverse; where a gazette is passed banning MEN from drink or associating with alcohol!! There would be total and utter chaos and complete upheaval!! All mens’ groups, who are currently ridiculing and questioning why women (whose only concern should be the household and the moral fabric of a society), are making a noise about anything at all, let alone “ALCOHOL!!”, would now go to ‘pot’ themselves!! We would find a not so merry band of distraught men running amok, wondering what on earth to do at the end of each work day, how on earth to bust up a bulwark of their earnings and what excuse to come up with when it comes to bashing in the good wife!! Rest assured though, we would see them all vehemently march up, not just to the Supreme Court, but even to the Hague or ICCPR if they had to, as the MAN’s fundamental rights and entitlement would have been harshly and unjustifiably taken away!!
